Why Company Values and Sea Otters Go Hand in Hand

If you’re at all familiar with Logik.io, you have undoubtedly noticed an otter or two swimming through our branding. In honor of World Otter Day, we thought it was the perfect time to share the story of Logik.io’s connection to the resourceful, supportive, amazing sea otter. 

Logik.io’s Core Values

To tell the full story, we need to take a trip down memory lane, back to the founding of Logik.io. 

When we were first building the company, it was critically important to us that we have a set of core values to guide our decision-making, connect our culture, and support us as we grow. The core values we developed when we founded Logik.io are ever-present in our work across the team. 

Logik.io’s five core values are:

Now, we can hear you asking, ‘But how does all this connect to sea otters?’

How Our Values Link with Sea Otters

While it may be tempting to think the most interesting characteristic about sea otters is that they’re cute (and they are), there are many qualities that make sea otters special. And those special qualities mirror some of what we strive for with our own core values. For example… 

• Sea otters are one of the only mammals that use tools.
  Unlike other marine mammals, sea otters use rocks to pummel shells and open them up. The sea otter also hammers rocks against tightly closed abalone shells to pry them off of rocks and eat the meat inside. We’d say that’s pretty innovative!
• The sea otter has the densest fur of any animal on Earth. 
  Sea otters have no blubber to keep them warm like other marine mammals, so they evolved — dare we say optimized 1% — to have ultra-dense fur to keep them insulated against the cold.
• Sea otters are keystone species in their ecosystems. 
  Because they have an important influence on their environments by eating sea urchins, which enables kelp to flourish, sea otters are essentially giving back to their natural ecosystem.
• Sea otters stick together by holding paws while they float. 
  To ensure their fellow otters don’t drift away while they sleep, sea otters stay connected by forming “rafts” and hold onto each other in the water. When we think about our value of investing in each other, this special otter quality really resonates.
• Grooming is crucial to sea otter community survival.
  Sea otters spend up to five hours each day grooming themselves and each other, because if a sea otter’s fur becomes dirty, it has trouble absorbing the air needed to keep it warm. Much like our value of keeping customers first, the sea otter prioritizes what needs to be done to ensure others can thrive.

As you can see, we are inspired by many of the unique characteristics of the incredible sea otter.

An Otterly Good Reason to Give Back

Back in 2022, in honor of our Give First value, Logik.io adopted an otter — which we named Cosmo — through the WWF. Our own Stuti Thapliyal spearheaded that initiative and has been a champion of our otter-inspired values since day one. Stuti put it best when she said:

“Otters are not just adorable, smart, and resourceful but also deeply connected to their communities. This mirrors our journey as a company — constantly innovating, optimizing, and investing in each other. Adopting an otter symbolizes our journey and values perfectly. There is a parallel between the otters' way of life and our company's values. By having an otter as our mascot, we not only highlight our values but also promote awareness about conservation.”

Today, we are once again living our Give First value by taking action for World Otter Day. Hosted by the International Otter Survival Fund, World Otter Day takes place each year on the last Wednesday in May, and was created to raise awareness and support fundraising efforts for otters around the world. 

For World Otter Day 2024, Logik.io is proud to share that we have made a donation to the IOSF specifically to support sea otter conversation. 

We hope that in a small way, we are able to keep supporting the animal that has become such a purposeful mascot for our brand and our company culture.
